FORMULAS
Six Formulas.
One Complete Picture.
Each formula measures readability from a different angle. Together they give a more complete and reliable result than any single score.
Flesch Reading Ease
1948The most widely recognized readability score. Uses average sentence length and average syllables per word. A score of 60-70 is standard for general-audience content. Below 30 is academic or technical.
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level
1975Converts the same inputs as Flesch Reading Ease into a US school grade equivalent. Grade 8 means an 8th-grader can understand the text. Widely used in SEO tools including Yoast and Semrush.
Gunning Fog Index
1952Focuses on "complex words" defined as words with three or more syllables. A higher proportion of complex words raises the score significantly. Grade 12 is the threshold for general business writing.
Coleman-Liau Index
1975Uses character count instead of syllable count. Counts letters per 100 words and sentences per 100 words. Character counting is fully precise in any programming language, making this one of the most reliable formulas to compute.
ARI
1967Also character-based, not syllable-based. Developed for real-time analysis on typewriter output, where syllable counting was impractical. Uses characters per word and words per sentence.
SMOG Index
1969The most accurate formula for technical, medical, and legal writing. Focuses entirely on polysyllabic words (three or more syllables). Requires at least 30 sentences for a reliable result. Results for shorter texts are shown with a note.
WHY IT MATTERS
Readable Content
Performs Better.
Google Rewards Clarity
Readable content keeps visitors on the page longer. Search engines use engagement signals as ranking inputs. Grade 7-9 is the recommended range for general-audience content, including blog posts and landing pages.
Check Before Publishing
After running text through the Humanizer, verify that the rewritten output matches the reading level your audience expects. A quick check takes seconds.
Consistent Quality Across Writers
When multiple writers contribute to one publication, readability scoring gives editors a shared benchmark. Consistent reading levels lead to more consistent reader experience.
Emails That Get Read
Marketing emails and sales outreach perform better when they are easy to read. Lower grade levels reduce friction. Higher open and click rates follow.
